CORONADO VILLAGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This two-story, 93,000-square-foot facility of brick, masonry, steel and concrete houses kindergarten through fifth grades in San Diego’s historic seaside community. The school is designed to accommodate a maximum enrollment of 925 students on a 4-acre site.

The design successfully utilizes brick-arched colonnades, exterior balcony walkways and pitched roofs to create a classic residential / campus feel. Each grade level consists of individual classrooms, surrounding an enclosed exhibit corridor with adjacent faculty workroom and toilet facilities. Along with specialized classroom / laboratory areas for science, reading and computer learning, the facility includes a private courtyard for the kindergarten and a complete library / media center. A freestanding, multi-purpose building provides the community with a “Village Hall” for public meetings while serving the school with separate food service, 150-student assembly / teaching area, and indoor physical education spaces.

The design of the Village Elementary School was carefully planned to capture and reflect the unique character of the Coronado community as well as the scale of the surrounding neighborhood.
