ST. PAUL’S PROGRAM FOR ALL-INCLUSIVE CARE OF THE ELDERLY

St. Paul’s PACE is a non-profit health plan for seniors who prefer not to move into a nursing home, but whose health problems make it impossible for them to stay at home without the help of caregivers. Older adults can maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life because PACE provides all medical care (emergency care 24 hours/day), a PACE Day Center, home care services, and transportation so they so not need to move to a nursing home.

This PACE site is located in an old Office Depot building in Chula Vista. Both sites take advantage of the cost savings of converting an existing facility rather than constructing an energy consuming new structure. In the case of the Chula Vista site, St. Paul’s is taking advantage of the surplus of abandoned retail space. Understanding the current concern regarding cost effective health care, we feel that adaptive reuse is a great answer. The aging of the Baby Boomers creates a growing need for dispersed clinics. Following the PACE model is a great solution as an alternative to institutionalized living and frequent emergency room visits.

The project was processed as OSHPD 3 through the City of Chula Vista.
