Set the picturesque park overlooking La Jolla Cove, adjacent to the coastline and cliffs, sits the EB Scripps Park Pavilion. A visionary community group spearheaded a transformative project to replace the well-worn and aging facility, built in 1967, recognizing the need for enhanced public amenities and safety. This endeavor, rooted in community-approved concept plans, landscaping considerations, and adherence to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards, culminated in the unveiling of the new EB Scripps Park Comfort Station in the spring of 2022.

Spanning 2,000 square feet, the new structure seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, offering spaces for public use and site enhancements that honor the beauty of the area. Embracing a commitment to public safety and well-being, the facility boasts modern amenities, including mens’ and women’s facilities, single occupancy all-gender bathroom stalls, handwashing stations, and changing areas, catering to the diverse needs of park users and the wider community. Furthermore, thoughtfully positioned exterior and interior showers cater to the requirements of nearby divers, swimmers, and beachgoers, fostering a sense of inclusivity and accessibility.

Not only humans enjoy the Scripps Park Pavilion

Central to the design philosophy was the creation of meaningful site and program relationships. Outdoor showers, strategically oriented towards beach access, promote connectivity with the coastal environment, while amenities such as an information kiosk, storage space, and power outlets facilitate community events and gatherings, enriching the park experience for all.

In striving to foster a deeper connection between the park and beach community, the structure was envisioned as a beacon, a landmark symbolizing unity and vitality. The signature floating roof, evocative of soaring wings, features translucent panels and open lattice work, fostering an airy ambiance and seamless integration with the elements. Complementing this ethereal design, bold concrete walls, textured and color-blended to echo the coastal habitat and nearby bluffs, anchor the building in its natural context, embodying a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics.
